Batesian Mimicry: Can a Leopard Change Its Spots — and Get Them Back?
نویسنده
چکیده
Can undefended mimics survive outside the range of their noxious models? Two recent studies on Batesian mimicry suggest they can, but alternative survival strategies and morphologies are then favoured.

Evolutionary biology: To mimicry and back again.
M any species that are dangerous or unpleasant to eat have evolved conspicuous signals that warn predators to avoid them. Not surprisingly, many other species that are edible to predators, from birds and butterflies to salamanders and sea slugs, have evolved to resemble these inedible species 1. By doing so, the 'mimics' receive protection from predation, just like their 'models'. This phenomen...
متن کاملOnce a Batesian mimic, not always a Batesian mimic: mimic reverts back to ancestral phenotype when the model is absent.
Batesian mimics gain protection from predation through the evolution of physical similarities to a model species that possesses anti-predator defences. This protection should not be effective in the absence of the model since the predator does not identify the mimic as potentially dangerous and both the model and the mimic are highly conspicuous. Thus, Batesian mimics should probably encounter ...
متن کاملPredator perception of Batesian mimicry and conspicuousness in a salamander.
In Batesian mimicry a palatable mimic deceives predators by resembling an unpalatable model. The evolution of Batesian mimicry relies on the visual capabilities of the potential predators, as prey detection provides the selective force driving evolutionary change. We compared the visual capabilities of several potential predators to test predictions stemming from the hypothesis of Batesian mimi...
متن کاملAggressive use of Batesian mimicry by an ant-like jumping spider.
Batesian and aggressive mimicry are united by deceit: Batesian mimics deceive predators and aggressive mimics deceive prey. This distinction is blurred by Myrmarachne melanotarsa, an ant-like jumping spider (Salticidae). Besides often preying on salticids, ants are well defended against most salticids that might target them as potential prey. Earlier studies have shown that salticids identify a...
متن کاملThe diversity and evolution of batesian mimicry in Papilio swallowtail butterflies.
Papilio swallowtail butterflies exhibit a remarkable diversity of Batesian mimicry, manifested in several sex-limited and polymorphic types. There is little understanding of how this diversity is distributed within Papilio, and how different mimicry types have evolved in relation to each other. To answer these questions, I present a graphical model that connects various mimicry types by hypothe...
